On our computers we prefer to use Nvidia graphical cards, however in case of laptops chipsets from Intel are the most popular 😉 We know also people who prefer AMD/Radeon solutions because of better performance in computer games. Unfortunately a lot of users have reported today very worrisome failure…
It occurs that AMD has missed very serious error in their newest drivers (Crimson Edition precisely). In some cases these drivers set speed of fans at 20% and this speed does not change when the temperature raises. As you probably guessed, a few hour game can in this case permanently damage the graphics module. Unfortunately, these reports are not fabricated and it has been officially confirmed by AMD:
“WE’RE AWARE OF ISOLATED REPORTS OF LOW FAN STATES FOLLOWING THE INSTALLATION OF RADEON SOFTWARE ‘CRIMSON EDITION’ ON SELECT RADEON GPUS. OUR ENGINEERING TEAMS WILL IDENTIFY AND ADDRESS THIS ISSUE, AND WE INTEND TO RELEASE A HOTFIX ON AMD.COM THIS COMING MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30TH.”
However, as a workaround you can use the Overdrive mode, which is mainly used for card overclocking. In this case you can use this mode for manual controlling of fan speed.
Of course users have their own version of this story and they know “the truth” 😉 By the way, we wonder whether the company will repair damaged cards.
