The first information about upcoming MediaTek Helio X30 chip has appeared about 4 months ago. A month later (i.e. at the end of April), the first information about performance of Helio X30 SoC leaked. It is supposed that the newest MediaTek mobile chipset will provide about 23% better performance than the current leader, i.e. Qualcomm Snaprdragon 820.
Of course, Qualcomm company is also working on new solution, so the competition will be fierce. In my opinion, MediaTek has very interesting strategy. Their key to the success is to use try-cluster architecture, where the first cluster has very high clocked cores which provide high performance, the second cluster is less powerful, but good enough for normal operation, and finally, the third cluster is very power efficient and its main task is to increase the battery life time.
MediaTek has announced recently the Helio X30 chipset officially.
Once again, this will be a deca-core construction with a trio-cluster design. It looks that MediaTek is satisfied with this approach, used in the Helio X20 and X25. MediaTek will start shipping the Helio X30 sometime next year, so it is hard to speculate when the first smartphones with this chipset will be available on the market. The upcoming SoC will be build using TSMC’s 10nm FinFET process. It will contain four Cortex A-73 cores clocked at 2.8 GHz, four Cortex A-53 cores clocked at 2.2 GHz, and two Cortex A-35 cores running at 2 GHz.
This official MediaTek Helio X30 specification almost perfectly matches the information leaked back in March.
The MediaTek Helio X30 chipset will support cameras with the resolution up to 40 MP for photos and up to 24 MP for videos. Therefore, 16 MP camera will be able to record a video at 60 fps. The 120 fps will be available for 8 MP snapper. The Helio X30 will be support also up to 8 GB of RAM with two LPDDR4 POP 1600MHz channels. The graphics unit will be perfect for upcoming Virtual Reality extensions, because it will be a quad-core PowerVR 7XT.
People are speculating, that the first high-end smartphones with Helio X30 on board, will be released on the Asian market during the second half of 2017. I wonder what Qualcomm with their Snapdragon and Samsung with their Exynos will prepare by this time.
