Qualcomm is working quite hard on constantly improving its chipsets, which provide connectivity for the most popular mobile devices available on the market. Recently, a new LTE modem called Snapdragon X24 was presented, which offers a maximum download speed of 2 Gbps. The new solution will be demonstrated during the forthcoming MWC 2018, which takes place in Barcelona. However, the first smartphones with a new modem are to appear later this year.

Everything points to the fact that Qualcomm will demonstrate to us around the middle of this year a new SoC, which will be equipped with the Snapdragon X24 modem. The flags which will soon appear on the market will be equipped with Snapdragon 845, which has a Snapdragon X20 category 18 modem (1.2 Gbps). However, the new layout will be much faster. We are dealing here with the first LTE category 20 device presented in the world, which, thanks to the combination of 4×4 MIMO together with the aggregation of 5 frequency bands, enables the transmission of 20 data streams with a bit rate of 100 Mbps each. The speed achieved in this way is up to 2 Gbps, but unfortunately it will be difficult to achieve in practice.

None of the operators in the world have enough frequency blocks to use the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X24 modem.

The device itself can aggregate up to 7 bands, which goes beyond the LTE network capabilities defined at the very beginning. That is why we are dealing here with the LTE Advanced Pro class solution, which is described as 4.9G is a preview of the possibilities of the upcoming 5G networks. Qualcomm also worked on sending data in the so-called uplink direction from the smartphone up to the base station. Snapdragon X24 uses aggregation of 3 frequency bands and 256 QAM modulation, which translates to a speed of 316 Mbps. In addition, the new modem also benefits from the LAA solution promoted in the United States, which allows you to run LTE base stations operating on the unlicensed 5 GHz band. Qualcomm announced that the new modem will be included in smartphones, which will appear on the market at the end of this year. Perhaps among them will also be Samsung Galaxy Note 9. However, this is only my personal guess, which has not been confirmed by any leaks.
